This rumor has been around for awhile, but everyone on TWiT and other podcasts I listen to thinks its a bad idea. Obviously, Microsoft doesn't. As long as they don't turn my Yahoo! Mail into Hotmail, as a consumer, I am indifferent. From a business strategy perspective, I'm not sure Microsoft gains a lot from this deal.
Microsoft bids $44.6 billion for Yahoo
REDMOND, Wash. - Microsoft Corp. is offering $44.6 billion in cash and stock for search engine operator Yahoo Inc. in a move to boost its competitive edge in the online services market.
The unexpected announcement Friday comes as Microsoft, the world's biggest software company, seeks new ways to compete more efrfectively against the search and online advertising powerhouse Google Inc.

MSFT has been outflanked for 10 years by more agile and new-technology-embracing companies. For the first 5 years while the world was embracing the web, MSFT was still working over your desktop. Gates has as much admitted that ignoring the web for so long was the biggest strategic mistake they've made. They've been cozying up to Yahoo for a couple of years now.
I know a lot of people HATE Microsoft. I don't. They make acceptable products on a global scale. They use their clout to get what they want.
I'll be curous to see if this can jump start Microsoft a little.
